The announcement of up to 1,000 new homes at Dowsing Point is the most significant housing release in greater Hobart in a generation, and Tasmania’s civil construction sector is ready to help deliver it.

Civil Contractors Federation Tasmania CEO Andrew Winch said the civil sector was ready to get on the tools and get the job done quickly.

“Housing construction doesn’t start when the builders turn up. It starts when civil contractors prepare the land, build roads, lay pipes, manage stormwater and connect the services that make new homes possible,” Mr Winch said.

“To get the site ready, the Tasmanian and Australian Governments will have to commit to building the water and sewerage, power, gas, communications and road infrastructure needed.  It’s a big job, but if governments fund it properly, we’re up to the task of delivering.”

Mr Winch said the project should be treated as a major infrastructure priority, not just a land release.

“Projects like this, alongside the stadium, mean we can plan for the future of the sector with confidence.  It means we can build the workforce, skills and capacity our industry needs to deliver for all Tasmanians.

“This is the sort of project where the benefits will be felt right around the State,” Mr Winch said.
