Andrew Winch, CEO of the Civil Contractors Federation Tasmania (CCF Tasmania), today has welcomed the Liberal Party’s $1.74 million commitment to support the development of Tasmania’s Earthworks Academy, announced by Senator Kerrynne Liddle and Lyons candidate Susie Bower.
The funding, which supports a pledged return to the 80:20 road funding rule under a Dutton Liberal Government, will bolster the civil construction industry and address critical skills shortages.
“This investment is an important shot in the arm for Tasmania’s civil contracting sector,” Mr. Winch said.
“The Earthworks Academy will equip Tasmanians with the skills to build our roads, homes, and infrastructure, ensuring our industry thrives. We applaud the Liberals for backing our workforce and regional growth.”
The $1.74 million will fund all-weather training facilities, simulated worksites, road maintenance infrastructure, and accommodation for 15 students, plus amenities and teacher quarters.
It will build on the Tasmanian Government’s $4.3 million investment to train earthmoving operators, bulldozer drivers, excavators, and more.
“This creates a pipeline of skilled workers—crucial for projects like the Bass Highway and tackling Tasmania’s housing shortfall,” Mr. Winch said.
The Liberals’ 80:20 road funding commitment promises hundreds of millions for Tasmanian roads, amplifying the Academy’s impact.
“With 4,200 construction jobs forecast by 2029, this ensures we’re ready,” Mr. Winch said.
“It’s practical support that builds careers and communities.”
