The Civil Contractors Federation Tasmania has expressed alarm civil construction is not included in the new Federal Key Apprentices Program.
CCF Tasmania CEO, Andrew Winch today welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of the Key Apprentices Program, but expressed dismay apprenticeships in civil construction are not part of the initiative.
“The Federal Government’s announcement of a $10,000 incentive for apprentices entering the residential construction and clean energy sectors for trades such as bricklaying, plumbing, and carpentry is commendable and goes some way to address the housing skills shortage,” Mr Winch said. “However, none of these trades can be effective without the civil industry laying the groundwork – the very foundation of every housing project. “Civil construction is a critical sector for building and construction, you can’t build a house without civil contractors to prepare the subdivision, and connect the critical power, water, and sewer infrastructure every housing development depends on,” Mr Winch said.
Despite infrastructure being highlighted as a critical area of shortage it remains uncertain whether civil apprentices will receive the necessary funding to address the housing crisis. “I can assure you our industry are screaming out for skilled works and this is a significant oversight by Government,” Mr Winch said.
“The civil sector is already facing significant challenges, including an aging workforce, increasing project demands, and a growing skills gap.
“Apprentices are crucial to addressing these challenges and ensuring the long-term viability of the industry. “The Key Apprentices Program is a great initiative, but if civil construction apprenticeships are not included it is an opportunity lost.
“CCF Tasmania calls on the Federal Government to immediately address this matter and:
• Ensure the $10,000 incentive program includes civil construction apprentices
• Recognise the critical role civil construction plays in Australia’s infrastructure and economy.
• Provide equal opportunities for aspiring apprentices across all sectors.
“Civil construction apprentices are not just workers—they are nation-builders.
“Their exclusion from this initiative undermines the foundation of our infrastructure future and overlooks the enormous contributions they make every day.
“We urge the government to take this opportunity to rectify this oversight and include civil apprentices in this program,” Mr Winch said.
